Why Phuket is a top sport fishing destination

Thailand's Andaman coast puts Phuket within reach of some of the richest deep-sea fishing grounds anywhere in Southeast Asia. Warm currents sweep across offshore reefs, seamounts and drop-offs not far from the marina, and that movement is exactly why trophy species stick around all year. What you can expect to catch

These waters hold pelagic species built to fight, the kind that'll test your grip as much as your patience.

• Black and blue marlin. The billfish everyone wants a photo with, most active along deep-water ledges from November through April.
• Yellowfin tuna. Fast and heavy, with runs that'll pull line off your reel faster than you'd like. They're around nearly the whole year.
• Giant trevally (GT). A reef predator that hits hard and refuses to quit once hooked.
• Barracuda. Sharp, sudden strikes, sometimes with the fish clearing the water. Great sport on lighter tackle.
• Sailfish, wahoo and dorado. All three show up often enough that no two trips look the same.

Best time to go

Peak season falls between November and April, when the sea stays calm and the sky stays clear. Fishing doesn't stop outside that window. It just gets a bit less predictable. Talk to your captain about seasonal patterns before picking a date. They'll usually know what's actually biting that week.
