Why a hot air balloon in Chiang Mai deserves the early alarm

Plenty of places offer sunrise balloon rides. Few of them feel like this one.

The first light catches the Doi Suthep range, and you're already climbing, drifting over emerald rice fields, temples that have stood for centuries, and threads of mist still clinging to the valley floor. The basket barely makes a sound the whole way up.

Before dawn

You'll be up before the sun, when the air is still and cool, which is exactly the kind of morning a balloon pilot wants. A short transfer gets you to the launch site, where you can watch the crew work the balloon upright as the sky slides from indigo into gold. There's a welcome drink first, then a safety briefing, and only after that do you actually leave the ground.

In the air

The view opens up in a way that no photo really prepares you for. Flights last somewhere between 60 and 90 minutes, and over that time you'll pass above:

• Traditional farming villages tucked against thick tropical canopy
• The Mae Ping River winding its way through the valley

Your pilot works the altitude the whole flight. At times you're taking in a wide sweep of the whole valley. At others, you're low enough to pick out rooftops and individual treetops.

The landing

Touching down is an occasion of its own. There's a ballooning tradition that goes back generations, and you'll follow it: a glass of sparkling wine, still air, and the countryside settling back into quiet around you.

When to fly

The season runs November through February, when Chiang Mai's skies stay clear and the mornings are cool enough to actually enjoy. Early flights get the calmest air and the best light, and that matters for the ride itself as much as it does for your photos.
